Whanau, a word in Maori culture that translates to extended family through their friendships. No matter where they are in the world, once “fans” are hit with the Kora superpowers they become relentless in their devotion to the music and the music culture that is so inimitably Kora. There are some bands that bring you down and others that lift you up, and then there are those bands that leave you bewildered. Experiencing Kora live for the first time is like a shot of adrenalin straight to the heart. At first there is that moment of shock, mesmerized by the sheer energy on stage, like something tribal, and then it hits you, and you become part of the experience. Raised in a home where music was their daily feed, performing together is second nature for the Kora brothers. Says Laughton Kora, “Our dad is an old-school muso and had us playing on stage since I was six. There was always respect for the music.” Fran Kora concurs, “The best thing about playing in this band is that we almost have a telepathic form of communication.” The Kora brothers do not fit into any stylistic box. A festival favourite known for their powerful stage presence, they deliver hard hitting grooves mashing up roots and experimental rock with vocal harmonies and a powerhouse rhythm section. Kora’s most influential publicist is their fan. When they released their debut album in 2007 it shot straight to number 1 on the official NZ chart by pure word of mouth. The double platinum band recently released their new video online, Story Ain’t Over, and with an underground trait that is decisively Kora, clocked in the first 20 000 page views on Youtube with only a whisper. And so now all eyes are again on Kora in anticipation for their follow up studio album. The Kora brothers are going global again when they tour the States with several gigs locked in throughout the month of June. With dedicated time recently being committed to producing the new album, the overseas fans will get a taste of all good things to come. For MP3s, Station IDs, Interviews: contact michelle@kora.co.nz
